elizabeth winkelhoff, the creative behind amethyst alchemist art, is a self-taught craft artist. She specializes in bookbinding, paper making, and embroidery, and has additional backgrounds in painting, zinecraft, quilting, and garment construction.
Her artistic practice as a queer artist is to empower others to craft sustainably, to provide creative space for other local artists, and to reuse what other people in her area are giving or throwing away.
Elizabeth believes that handiwork can expand the definitions of identity, art, and history, and she aims to explore that in everything she makes. Her crafting methods are steeped in sustainability and reuse, and she employs production methods that minimize waste. She began as a student of her mother and grandmothers, and she’s been crafting ever since. Elizabeth is available to teach classes in bookbinding and paper making, and she takes commissions for custom books through her email (amethystalchemistart@gmail.com) and website.
Beyond art, Liz works as a non-profit data analyst and advocate for arts and humanities education in District of Columbia public schools. She holds a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Archaeology from Johns Hopkins University, where she researched the emergence of representational art, and handiwork from domestic craft artists of the Bronze Age Aegean and Andean mountains.
